When people hear that we enjoy a much lower cost of living in Lake Chapala, Mexico, they automatically think that Lake Chapala real estate must also be cheap. Conversely, if you are moving from Winnipeg, Canada or North Dakota or other rural areas in the U.S., your comparison might give you the opposite impression but I think most will agree that you will get more for your money than you will back home.

The village of Ajijic is the center of most of the foreign community activities. Truly representative of the typical Mexican pueblo with its narrow cobblestone streets and central plaza, this 450-year-old village is the most popular place for visitors and residents alike. Writers such as D.H. Lawrence came and were inspired, as were many musicians, actors and dancers.

The Mexican people call Chapala the ”Little Switzerland of Mexico,” partly because of the beauty and partly because of its peaceful history. Many large properties along the lake were weekend homes to the rich and famous from throughout Mexico, the United States and even Europe. Though many of these houses have been converted into commercial sites, many beautiful homes still remain “behind the walls” and are only visible from a boat ride on the lake.

The zocalo (main square) across from the village church is the focal point for meeting your neighbors, friends and shopping.
