Natural Ways to Prepare for the Flu Season

01 | 01 | 2010

by L.T. McGee, ND

What Can You Do?

01 2010 FluUse Vitamin D to treat the flu. If you were to maintain your vitamin D levels within the optimal range by taking 5000 units daily, you would likely avoid being affected during the cold and flu season entirely. If you are coming down with flu-like symptoms and have not been on vitamin D  you can take doses of 50,000 units a day for three days to treat the acute infection. Watch “Why vitamin D helps immunity” on YouTube.

Extreme hygiene. Always wash and disinfect hands thoroughly, especially before eating.

  • Using an alcohol based hand wash is highly suggested.
  • Using a final rinse solution of a small amount of bleach in water for your dishes is an excellent way of not spreading viruses in your home.

Normal surgical masks, dust and paint masks are almost useless therefore are potentially dangerous to use. High efficiency mask Type P2N95 are 95% efficient if available, usually from Medical Supply stores and Firsts Aid Equipment suppliers.

Focus on cleansing the body and boosting the immune system. Clean up your intestinal tract.

Use a good probiotic (acidophilus lactobacillus) daily to substantially boost your immune system.

Drink plenty of unsweetened fluids, a full gallon within 24 hours if you get sick, and at least 2 quarts a day if not sick.

A low-sugar diet is ideal to boost immunity. Sugar slows down the activity of white blood cells. Avoid ice cream, table sugar, cakes, sodas, and cookies as much as possible. Treat sugar as a drug; stay as far away from it as possible.

Consider the following immune boosting foods: Tomatoes, winter squash, asparagus, avocadoes, Brazil nuts, and garlic.

Optimizing Your Immune System

Stop smoking. But you already knew that.

Avoid Sugar.

Limit Coffee. Its acidity can affect your body’s ability to assimilate needed nutrients.

Reduce alcohol. Alcohol abuse is associated with increased incidence of infectious diseases.

Eliminate toxic foods. Eat organic foods as much as possible. Commercial food contains pesticides, insecticides, genetically modified foods, irradiated foods, food additives, artificial colors and flavors, and preservatives. There are over 3000 different chemicals added to our food.

Avoid using tap water for drinking or cooking. Use distilled or reverse osmosis water instead.

Get your pHs (acid/alkaline) balanced.

Alternative Treatments That Are Most Likely To Help During A Severe Pandemic

Garlic. Very effective antiviral. It has an antibacterial action equivalent to 1% penicillin. It is also effective against strep, staph, and even anthrax bacteria. Best if fresh (raw) or crushed. 2 to 3 cloves a day is suggested by many authorities. There are also capsules available. No toxic effects noted. (Pubmed PMID 9049657)

Onion – Everything that’s been said about Garlic can be said about onion.

Vitamin C – Perhaps the best known natural immunity booster. It has been suggested by experts that at the first sign of influenza infection begin taking oral vitamin C to “bowel tolerance”. This would mean taking 1000 – 4000 mg of vitamin C per hour until bowels become loose. At that point the vitamin C dose should be decreased slightly until the bowels normalize. (Pubmed PMID 10543583, 634178, 16169205)

Green Tea - Very effective antiviral. Also decreases the production of inflammatory cytokines. May have antiviral activity that is equal to other antivirals such as Tamiflu. (Pubmed PMID 16137775)

Vitamin E – Immune booster also decreases the production of inflammatory cytokines. (Pubmed PMID 155882360, 10929076)

Foods And Supplements To Avoid During A Flu Pandemic

Spirulina and Chlorella – AVOID- Increases the production of inflammatory cytokine. (Pubmed PMID 11731916)

Honey – AVOID – Increases production of inflammatory cytokines (Pubmed PMID 12824009)

Chocolate – AVOID – Increases production of inflammatory cytokines (Pubmed PMID 12885154, 10917928)

Echinacea – AVOID – Although it is often used for normal seasonal flu, research shows that it may increase the chance of cytokine storms in a pandemic flu. (Pubmed PMID 15555647, 9568541)

Dairy products and Bananas –AVOID- These foods increase mucous production.
