Opening a Bank Account

     Foreigners can open banks in Mexico and the Lake Chapala area. There are different banks with different rules, we have listed the ones most used by those of us who are from North of the Border.

  • Places where you can open a bank account

    Bancomer Bank

    Bancomer has bilingual staff and printed information to help you decide what account is best for you. They are not affiliated with the US so no Social Security number is needed and no W2s will be issued.

    To open an account at BBVA Bancomer you will need:

        An FM2 or FM3
        A valid passport
        Proof of address, such as a phone bill or electric bill
        $1000 pesos for a personal account or $5000 pesos to open a business account.

    Multiva

    Requirements for Opening Bank Accounts:

        1. Passport
        2. FM2, FM3 or FMT
        3. Proof of address (utility bill)
        4. ID (driver licence)

    Starting deposit $500,000.00 pesos. This account is only for invesment, this means you can not have access to your money every day.

    Multiva Bank

    Requirements for Opening Bank Account:

        1. Passport
        2. FM2 or FM3
        3. Proof of address (utility bill)

    Starting deposit $10,000.00 PESOS.
    With this account you are able to have a cheque book and/or a debit card and it works as a regular bank account.

    Requirements for Opening Bank Account:

        1. Passport
        2. Driver licence
        3. Proof of address

    Starting deposit $1,000.00
    For Investment Funds from $10,000.00 and up.

     They will be opening a bank in the near future.

    Banco Santander

    Banco Serfin was a Mexican Bank and Santander which is a Spanish Bank, was bought by Serfin.

    They have no affiliation with banks in the USA or Canada, but they have a “convention” that allows Bank of America clients to withdraw money in Banco Santander without paying any fees. They can do this through the ATM machines of with the cashier.

    Documents you will need

          1. Passport
          2. Migratory form: FMT, FM” or FM3
          3. Address proff: Electricity Bill or Telephone Bill no older than 3 months. (It doesn’t have to be in your name).

          Open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

    Note: In case of death, the beneficiary of the account must have been named in the original contract and the bank must have address and telephone number. It is recommended to have a second person signing in the account in case of death.
