Can I sell a US car in Mexico

  • Selling a US Car in MexicoQuestion: My cousin lives in Lake Chapala and wants to sell her 1999 Suburban. It is registered in Texas, but now registered in Mexico. Can she sell in Mexico or would she need to drive to Texas where it was originally bought. If there is a website with this info, I can fwd it to her. Thank you.

Answer: Hi Sharon. If the vehicle is in fact registered in Mexico with Mexican plates, then it can be sold in Mexico. If it is still foreign plated, then it cannot be sold in Mexico. However, what some people do is offer their foreign plated vehicle here (in Mexico) for sale and when a buyer appears the owner would take the vehicle to the U.S. where they would meet the buyer and transfer the plates and complete the sale. A Mexican cannot own a foreign plated vehicle, nor can a foreigner with Immigrado status.

There is a company here in Chapala, Spenser & Co, that takes cars on assignment (and then the owner and buyer would do as above stated) and Spenser knows all the rules that apply and is also an excellent resource.

    all the best,
    Marie
